The Great Blue Herons interact with me quite often. We live on the Merrymeeting River in Alton and we see the Herons almost every day somewhere along the marsh. Because of that, I find that my work has included the Blue Heron in many of my Quilled pieces, as well as the cattails. I do recall when we first moved into our home that I saw a stump in the pond, or so I thought. And the next morning, the stump had moved. As I looked closer, I realized it was a Blue Heron standing on one leg and sleeping. But that was a long time ago. A couple years ago, I was looking out the window to see who was in my door yard, as I had seen a shadow cross the window. I thought someone was at the door, so I got up and looked around but saw nothing. I knew someone was out there, so I went out on the step and looked towards my car. And much to my surprise, was a Blue Heron standing next to my car on the pavement. You have to understand that we have a tiny pond and a brook running beside the house, so not really a place you would find a Blue Heron. Even though we had seen them in the pond, it has not been that often, and never on the driveway. I went back into the house to get my camera. By the time I got back, he was standing on the other side of the glass door staring at me, eye to eye, as he was that tall. I look back and realize that he was probably staring at himself, the reflection in the glass. I was too excited to get a picture and did not want to move. I just wanted to enjoy the moment. When he left, I went outside and of course, he was off plodding down the brook, looking for frogs, I expect. My second encounter was on the dock. I went for my usual walk to the River, and of course, no camera. The Blue Heron was standing at the end of the dock, looking down for fish, not aware that I was there. When he saw a fish, he dove off the dock, grabbed the fish and jumped back up onto the dock with the fish in his mouth. He was facing me, and immediately flew off with his fish. He looked a little goofy, but he was very proud of his accomplishment. So much for my camera. Maybe next time. And things have changed, as I now have that phone in my pocket, so that means a camera always. I don't know if its really better, or just there....  Quilled Great Blue Herons The Blue Herons are my favorite birds, as they visit us everyday, somewhere along the marsh. These quilled and framed Herons are framed in a 10x12 frame under glass, and you can choose mats and frames if you wish something different than my sample. I can even include them with a wedding invitation. I have five different quilled heron designs and on occasion create larger pieces (like the double heron below) with multiple herons and cattails.
